Miller Auto Darkening Welding Helmets
Back in the 1920s, electric arc welding used large, expensive, three-phase motor generators with DC output. Three-phase electricity was normally only available in teh large cities. Therefore the blacksmiths in the rural areas remainedusing the old fashioned hammer and forge to weld metals.
This was changed in 1929 when Niels Miller realised what was needed. A small, affordable arc welder that would work with the type of electricity that was readily available in rural Wisconsin. Miller had no spare money for expensive manufacturing so he used scrap metal sheeting, iron core and copper coil materials to hammer together the first portable welder, in his basement. This was a simple, non-rotating AC welder. Much lighter significantly smaller than the existing DC welders. It was also considerably cheaper.
From those humble beginning and through the challanges of WW2, where the Miller factory worked around the clock to produce arc welders for use in teh shipyards and other manufacturing plants.
Today Miler is one of the leading companies supplying all welding related products including the Miller Auto Darkening Weding Helmets.
